The ledge at Reichenbach is marked by a plaque written in English, German and French; the English inscription reads, "At this fearful place, Sherlock Holmes vanquished Professor Moriarty, on 4 May 1891."

I started this before christmas and since then Game of Shadows and BBC's Sherlock have both dealt with the same moment.

Sherlock Holmes seems to have existed in a more real and resounding way then many true historical figures. The places he lived in and died in are preserved and commemorated so faithfully that many people don't realise he never existed. I can't always believe it myself.
